Anthem of Greek party ‘Néa Dimokratía’

This is the anthem of the Greek conservative party New Democracy, that won the national elections with a large majority last June 7th. Its official name is ‘Ο Ύμνος της Νέας Δημοκρατίας’ (O Ýmnos tis Néas Dimokratías), Anthem of New Democracy, but sometimes it is called ‘Ζήτω η Νέα Δημοκρατία’ (Zíto i Néa Dimokratía), Long live New Democracy, verse that is found in the refrain. Its composer was the Greek singer and musician Robert Williams (Ρόμπερτ Ουίλιαμς).

New Democracy (best known as ND, ‘ni-délta’) was founded in 1974 by Konstantinos Karamanlis, who was prime minister of Greece from 1974 to 1980. Other heads of government from ND are Georgios Rallis (1980-81), Tzannis Tzannetakis (1989), Konstantinos Mitsotakis (1990-93), Kostas Karamanlis (2004-09), the founder’s nephew, Antonis Samaras (2012-15), and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Konstantinos’ son who toke office in July 7th 2019. With 158 chairs of 300 in the Parliament, ND has defeated the former premier Alexis Tsipras and his left-wing party Syriza.

Robert Williams was born in Athens in 1949 and played voice and guitar in the rock band Poll in the beginning of the 70’s, until entrying solo career in 1974. He represented Greece with other three singers in the 1977 edition of Eurovision, having reached the fifth place with the song Mathema Solfege.
